Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Steven Gerrard’s return to training with the club’s first team squad has put a smile on the faces of all of his players.

Gerrard has been back at Liverpool HQ since Monday, as he works out with the Reds first ahead of his return to action with LA Galaxy in the New Year.

Klopp has already stressed that Gerrard will not be adding to the 500-plus appearances he has made for his hometown club over the next few weeks, yet he believes his influence will still be felt during his time back on Merseyside.

Asked about Gerrard's arrival at training as he spoke ahead of his side's Capital One Cup quarter-final against Southampton on Wednesday night, the German joked: "He won't play (against Southampton)! But he was in good shape.

"I said to the team before training, when he was with us in the dressing room, it's completely normal. It should always be like this.

"If you are a player like Steven Gerrard in Liverpool then the doors have to be open always – that's how it is at the moment. It's an important sign for all players.

"If you behave like him in the club, if you always give everything you have, then it's easy to come back and that's how it is at the moment. It's a good situation.

"He was a very important player and at this moment he is a very important player because he is in training.

"Everybody had a smile on their faces when they saw Stevie. It's good to have him here. We hope we can help him and he can help us for sure only with being in the dressing room – it's good."

Gerrard certainly seems to be impressed with the impact Klopp has made at Anfield, as he has felt his love since making his temporary return to the fold at Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Klopp moved to deny stories that he is looking to sign a new keeper, as he gave his full backing to first choice Simon Mignolet.

"I'm absolutely satisfied with our goalkeeper situation," added Klopp. "We have enough high-quality goalkeepers.

"Simon Mignolet – I have had a lot of goalkeepers in the last few years and he is one of the smartest I've ever had. He is completely open. He's young enough to develop, to improve.

"He had not the most easy situation before I came here but since I am here there is nothing to criticise, absolutely nothing. He is a good football player. Everything is okay.

"Everyone is watching for a second Manuel Neuer or things like this but he is on a really good way. The goalkeeper situation until now is a comfortable one and I hope it stays like this, of course."
